How to Look Expensive on a Budget

How to make your outfit look more expensive, with tricks and ways to elevate your wardrobe.

While it might seem like the only way to achieve an expensive-looking wardrobe is to drop thousands of dollars on countless designer items, that's not quite true.

In fact, some of the world's most stylish women use a handful of tried-and-tested tricks to elevate outfits and make them look lavish, even when they're not.

Here is The Australian Finishing School and in collaboration with Harper’s Bazaar’s top tips:

1 - Get your clothing Tailored to your body shape.

There's no fashion piece slicker than a perfectly tailored suit or pair of trousers. But sometimes, to get that perfect fit, said suit and trousers need to make a quick stop at the alteration shop. It might cost you a few extra dollars, but the finished product will be worth it.

2 - Wear Block Colours such as navy, black, cream, red or pastels to have a chic and luxurious look

3 - Invest in Your Beauty Routine so your skin and hair is looking clean and healthy.

It doesn't matter how good your outfit is, if you hair looks like it needs taming, your outfit's not going to appear as expensive as it could. As for a makeup, a quick swipe of lipstick or defined brows instantly smartens your overall appearance.

4 - Keep Your Whites White. White fashion pieces are perfect for giving your outfit a clean, crisp finish.

5 - For women Emphasise The Waist.

Create shape and structure in your outfit by adding a belt/well-placed bum bag, or a tactful shirt tuck, to draw attention to the waist. It creates a feminine look which is not only attractive to both men and women but will enhance your overall shape.

6 - Layer More Causal Items With Structured Outerwear.

If you practically live in your favourite pair of jeans, an easy to way to instantly elevate you look is to add a blazer over the top. The same trick works with silky day dresses and slips. Add pointed toe heels for added style points.

7 - Invest in a quality designer bag and keep it clean

When you invest in designer bag, it might feel like your bag's already pulling its weight on the 'expensive outfit' front.

8 - Make Sure Everything Is Freshly Ironed, Steamed And Pressed. The 'expensiveness' of you look is instantly compromised when said shirt is covered in tiny wrinkles. Ironing, steaming or pressing your clothes in the morning (or the night before if you're super prepared), is the work of moments, but adds a tonne of class to your outfit. Invest in a hand steamer.

9 - Match Your Shoes With Your Bag

This is a tried and tested rule that isn't necessarily restrictive, but is intended to be a good fall-back if you're not sure which accessories to use when finishing an outfit off.

10 - Dress up when you can. If you're just playing at looking wealthy, you want to look like you've got somewhere important to be. A board meeting? An exclusive dance club? A yacht club? A red carpet? Every day should be an excuse to dress up and look the part aka affluent.

No matter how much money you have, you can still learn to class up your look a little. Learn how to dress like you've got more money than you know what to do with, grooming, and selecting clothes that will help you appear classy and sophisticated. You can also learn how to pull off the act to make the look complete.
